An eyewitness said the crowd that killed the man was shouting that they were Muslim and hated gays. I'm really tired of people pretending that this isn't a real issue. And yes, there are far more fundamentalist Christians in the US than fundamentalist Muslims, but any individual fundamentalist Christian is far less likely to snap and kill someone than any given fundamentalist Muslim. But but but muh religion of peace!

On a much less violent level, the only town so far to ban Pride flags was one of the few Muslim majority towns in the country. When Australia had its same sex marriage referendum, the only places to oppose it by an overwhelming margin were the Muslim parts of Sydney. I'm never going to understand why people who so loudly claim to support our rights and equality simultaneously support the mass immigration of those who so aggressively follow their religion's view of us as evil and inferior.

I'm not going to pretend otherwise - the past 10 years are the best time to be gay in all of history - but between things like this and the ongoing anti-gay radicalization of the DeSantis faction of the right, the trendline is now firmly going in the wrong direction.

Well I’m sure the young man who committed this atrocity had extensive knowledge of Islamic scriptures and traditions and lived a pious and praiseworthy life as the vast majority of Muslims throughout space and time would understand such a life.

You're usually a smart and insightful poster, but when it comes to Islam you have a blind spot the size of the Sun. If a Christian terrorist screamed deus vult and shouted about doing it because he's Christian while gunning down a bunch of innocents you wouldn't engage in this sort of pitiful deflection when people (rightly) talked about Christian extremism being a problem afterward, and I know you wouldn't.

I have to think about my basic physical safety and take extra caution because of this sort of crap. As far as I know, you don't. A lot of the pearl clutching straights in this thread could frankly do to shut the flck up. One of us was just murdered in cold blood and some of you have your first instinct to whatabout in defense of a pet victim group. Makes my blood boil.

Sharia law prescribes stoning of homosexuals to death. There are several countries that engage in this, explicitly citing sharia, to this very day. There are no Christian or Buddhist or Jewish or Hindu or whatever the hell else jurisdictions that do this. When there are numerous countries (as shown by the two charts above) in which a vast majority would like to have me and people like me be stoned to death, damn right I am going to point it out as a problem and not close my ears and eyes and pretend its all just fine because some would rather engage in feel good fantasies.

This is the sort of thing I would have thought unfathomable. For awhile it was. But now here we are.

In 1997 it happened in small town wyoming. Now in 2023 it happens in nyc. Yay progress!!!!!
