I predict that the governors races will be something of a wash in the end.  Each party will win up to 5 statehouses from the other side, with Republicans having ripe territory in WY, OK, KS, TN, MI and Democrats licking their chops at RI, CA, AZ, FL, HI.  But consider the implications for 2010 redistricting-- CA, AZ, and FL are much bigger prizes in terms of gerrymandering influence than most of the GOP targets.  If the Dems win back most of those states, that would make for a good gubernatorial election year, despite what the GOP ends up winning.

In other news, the House elections won't be that interesting.  Republicans should win back 5-10 seats in a natural bounceback from the past 2 elections.  There simply isn't enough low-hanging fruit for Dems to play much offense this time.  They're already gearing up to defend 50+ freshman members... THE SENATE is where the action will be.  Looking at the likely candidates in each specific race, a 4-5 seat gain for Dems is a real possibility.  This could bring the Senate split to a 65-35 supermajority-- potentially having the ability to break filibusters as we have not seen in a long time.  But, anything can happen, the economy could still be stuck in a rut, the terrorists could go bonkers, and voters may follow suit.  We shall see!!!
