Well... not entirely true... but it's a double-edged sword.

During WWII, increased need for production of planes, munitions etc etc certainly increased the number of jobs... but that also came at the cost increased government debt...

Keep in mind the broken window fallacy. Every dollar spent on an artificial boom producing weapons of destruction (and then rebuilding the mess they leave behind) is a dollar that didn't go to real long-term economic growth. A dollar that went to Germany (or Iraq) is a dollar that didn't go to increasing production of food, clothing, and other domestic goods.
