Sorry, I just don't think it's that high.

Perhaps not, but I've honestly not seen an issue that the country went so left so fast on.

Indeed.  It's kind of frightening in a way how fast the country has gone left on this issue.  It's not necessarily wrong, but I would have preferred a gradual shift to give the rest of the country time to get used to it.

It's like getting too much rain at one time in a persistent drought.  The ground can't absorb all of it at one time and thus creates flash flooding.  Slow, persistent, and frequent rains work better.

Why does everyone have to "get used to it"?  This only works if you subscribe to the theory that other's private relationships are somehow your business.

It's just a sudden shock to what most of our generation and the ones before us grew up with.  We lived in a world where marriage was defined by the Bible (and technically still is), not by man (and technically still is not).  We need time to get used to it and come to terms with it.

I'm not saying it's the wrong approach, but I don't want it dumped on everybody in America.  I also don't want to be called a bigot or some how accused of hate should I preach against same sex marriage.

....

The Bible is not the law of the land in America. I don't want evangelical right-wing Protestantism "dumped on everybody in America", for the record.

The difference is, gay people aren't actually imposing their values on you. Believing that  they do and using that (wrong) belief as justification for imposing your own values on society (ie denying gay people rights and freedoms) is bigotry, plain and simple.

And, yes, the Bible has been and always will be the prevailing book.  It will survive long after world laws are abolished.  Heaven and earth shall pass away, but God's Word will never pass away.  You can go to the bank on that.

And, again, I'm not totally against same sex marriage.  I am warming up to it, I am just not fully on board, yet.  Liberals can't expect every single American to be fully on board with it.

Ok, how about you state your reasons why you are not fully on board with gay marriage? Or do you not have any? Stop using your faith as an excuse for bigoted attitudes (and this goes for all religious people against gay marriage, not just you).

My faith is my reason, and it's a pretty good reason.

Being against gay marriage is not automatic bigotry.

I don't want to stop people from pursuing their dreams and their loves, I just don't want to be forced to recognize same sex marriage.

Then I guess it is ok for Muslims to impose sharia law in America as well. After all, "it's their faith."

I have yet to meet a single person against gay marriage who didn't hold some sort of bigoted attitude towards gay people.

Finally...no one is asking for you personally to recognize same-sex marriage. We're asking for the laws of the land to reflect equality of opportunity and equal protections for all citizens, regardless of how one religion's holy book supposedly says otherwise.

Why should your beliefs have the power of legislating social inequality? Because, you know, that's what they're doing.

Separation of church and state. That's my bible.

Call me old school, but I still believe the Bible is the premier written document in the entire world.  It is higher than the US Constitution, the European Union Treaty that was signed at Lisbon, higher than any other document.
Just so we're clear, you think the Bible is the supreme law of the land in the United States?

Yeah I don't think anyone in politics or law seriously thinks that. I mean, we hear trollish statements from Republican politicians and such (James Inhofe, Michelle Bachmann, etc.) but they're mostly trolling, IMHO.
