This may be the effect of BLM, maybe President Obama, the media dividing the nation, I don't know.

This is a worse post than my original post.

The "I don't know" is the worst thing about it tbh. F**king half-wit concern troll.

God I hate cop killers. They're disgusting thugs who only make things worse. Maybe if people stopped shooting at each other? But I guess that's too much to ask for.

Fixed.

Talking as if killing a police officer is the same thing as killing anyone else is very divisive and unhelpful. Police officers volunteer to do a very dangerous job and don't get a great deal of respect for doing it. It's not an exaggeration to say that they put their lives on the line to protect us, and when they are killed in cold blood, it has some special significance because they are our protectors. Nobody is saying that police lives are worth more than any other life.

That is utterly nonsensical logic. If the police deserve respect because they "put their life on the line", then why is it more tragic or shocking when a cop is killed, rather than someone who never made this commitment?

A death is always a tragedy, cop or not. I'm sorry to have this argument now, but it needs to be said.

Police are protectors of their communities, the average person is not. A murder in Burma is just as tragic as a murder in your neighborhood, but I'm convinced you wouldn't feel the same way about them. The police protect all of us, so we are all connected to them, and their deaths touch more of us on a deeper level than the average murder. The same would apply if others who affect a lot of lives on a daily basis, such as school teachers or religious leaders, were murdered.

Sure, the police does a lot of good. It also does a lot of horrible things, especially in the US, unless you're completely blind to everything that has happened in the past couple years. Worshiping cops as if they were some sort of saints is a big part of the reason why some of them (even if they are a minority) feel free to act like bullies and thugs. We should judge people based on their actions, not their uniforms.

At this point, nuking about 90% of the political threads on Atlas would probably be warranted.

Yeah, but those that shamelessly exploit tragedies should be the priority.
