I've been 45 hours without eating anything (and not really feeling any hunger either). That's what traveling does to me.

I'm really sorry for your friend, Sanchez. It's great that he has friends like you he can rely on in times like these.

Madeleine, I wish you all the best with this person, and I'm confident you know what's best for both of you.

Ugh...

So I got drunk this evening, unexpectedly (with only 2 goddamn cups of wine!!!). But the party ended at like 7PM and all my friends left. So now I'm drunk and alone.

How on earth can a party end at 7PM?Huh? Did it start at noon?

It wasn't really a party, more like a welcome event for grad students organized by the university. The two cups or wine were actually the maximum students were allowed to get (based on the reasonable assumption that no normal person could get drunk so easily... right...). I'm really a lightweight.

I, too, was drunk last night. My floormate Giuliano mistakenly stole a bottle of prosecco from me and when he realized his mistake and gave it back we split what was left of it, which meant three glasses for me, and I'm a relative lightweight.

I must say, I'd really like to see how you're like when you're drunk. I can't begin to imagine it. Cheesy

Prone to mood swings, but only between giggly and weepy, never angry or 'wild'. Also flirty, apparently. But only with girls I already like.

That would certainly be a very interesting thing to witness. That's a side of you we haven't been able to see much on here. Wink

As for me, I get mostly cheerful and outgoing, and even more talkative than I normally am when I'm with friends... I can really talk forever (and very loud) about a topic I'm into. Which is why my drunkenness is wasted (no pun intended) when I'm alone.

Although the bus ride back home was pretty interesting. At first I was posting on the forum and giggling like a weirdo at unfunny things I was doing. Then when my phone's battery died I started to sing songs out loud. I continued to sing - even louder - when walking down the street to my apartment.

F**king air conditioning. It's f**king everywhere. In every. Damn. Building. I went to LA to finally get some warmth, and instead I end up freezing like an idiot. And now I thing I caught a cold. A f**king cold in LA in September!!!

And it wastes billions of dollars. And pollutes the environment. F**king disgusting.

It's quite telling that everyone says they love hot and dry Southwestern weather, but can't live without cranking up the AC and draining the Colorado for their turfgrass lawns.

It's almost like, maybe just maybe, cold and wet is the way to go.

That's not the issue here. LA weather is perfectly livable without the AC. It's not that people need it - it's not even that it's a luxury comfort. I mean, some air conditioning would be fine for most people I guess, but here it's friggin' cold. It's the equivalent of buying a very expensive wine that tastes like crap when there are cheaper wines that taste better. It's doing it just 'coz we can.

Besides, it's a bit disingenuous to say "cold and wet is the way to go". Heating costs money and pollutes too.

Not sure what it was after all, but I had a runny nose and aching throat for a day. Thank God it didn't last.

AC is also great if you like to get headaches.

Ah, the famed avalanche of assigned readings in US university classes... I'm dreading it too (classes start tomorrow).

For the record, the class I got today was Statistical Methods I, and it looks like it's mostly going to be a Math class on probabilities. Can't say I'm enthusiastic at the prospect, but it might be helpful in the long run.

I don't know what all they will cover in your course, but statistical methods have continued to gain in importance in all fields with the prevalence of cheap computing and data storage. I suspect that you are correct in surmising that it will be helpful in the long run.

That's for sure! I've already had several classes in statistical methods (one each semester since I started my Masters at Sciences Po). It's just that those classes were more practical in the sense that they focused on how to actually perform data analyses, rather than on the math behind them. The current one, on the other hand, seems to be pure math.

One of my molars has busted open in the process of eating cereal, somehow. I'm stuck with it until the beginning of the week before I can really do anything about it.

The inside of a tooth is gross, you guys.

Ugh, that sounds horrible...

Isn't there an emergency room or some other place you can go to get at least basic treatment immediately?? I know the US healthcare system sucks, but this is insane.

So I had wayyyyyy to much to drink tonight. The most I've ever had, in fact.

Not trying to jinx, but make sure you have something to puke when you wake during the night. I had a pretty embarrassing experience on New Year's Eve (and yes, I had taken much more than two glasses Tongue).

For those curious I did manage to get that tooth filled and, it being a secondary molar, that's evidently good enough. My insurance doesn't cover crowns, unfortunately. I can chew once more.

Good to hear!

I'm finally recognized as an expert in my field.

Your analysis, as usual, was great, but Brie probably had the most funny/poignant/sad line in the article.

Especially because Canadians don't really elect a prime minister. Only the people of Papineau elected Trudeau last fall.

Now that's a short election, isn't it? Tongue
