Hopefully the left can assert its strength with these elections, as a preview for next year. Wink

Some polls

Genova (by Ipsos)
Doria (CL) 49.2%
Musso (FLI/UDC) 20.1%
Viani (PdL) 12.4%
Rixi (Lega) 6.5%
Putti (5 stelle) 5.8%

Smiley

After Puglia 2005 and Milan 2011, further proof that nominating non-PD left-wingers is the best way to win elections.

5 Stelle?

Doesn't they usually come last in elections, with small results?

Meh, I guess people are so pissed off that they are ready to go for the crazies. Beppe Grillo is an idiot and a scumbag (who said, among other things, that the government is worse than mafia because "mafia doesn't kill people[sic]"). But well, at least we don't have self-defined nazis so far. Tongue

I have to say I'm with Phil this time. FLI would make for a far more decent, competent and morally acceptable right-wing party.

For a party that was about to perform so terribly and assumed to be very unpopular, recent polling nationwide shows PdL only down about six points. In fact, the most recent poll - released May 3rd - has them down by only two points. Of the four most recent polls released in late April, two had them down five and the other two had them down six. I assume it will get worse with the narrative being "PdL collapses!" but I expected worse.

There was certainly some demobilization of right-wing voters, people who will nonetheless vote in parliamentary elections next year. Obviously, the right isn't "disappearing" as some have suggested.

New general election poll gives M5S 9% of the votes. PdL, Lega and to a lesser extent PD support dwindle. Abstention to a record high at 40%.

By 2013 we'll be like Greece politically.

Surprised that PdL still trails by only five to six points.

Silver lining to the fact that the PdL is polling like 19-22%?

I know the Left has sucked over the past few cycles but their 26% is way down from their usual, too.

PD is at 26%, but if you add SEL and IdV the result is still decent (though far from great).

Right...and you live in France and identify as French. Tongue  I'm American and follow this stuff but I wouldn't say "we."

I don't know about you, but I've got Italian nationality and I do vote in Italian elections, so I consider myself as a full italian citizen.

Yeah, when elections roll around. Tongue

For the record, I've always been vocally supportive of dual citizenship so don't think that I'm taking a shot at that.

Is dual citizenship illegal for US citizens ? If it is, that's a shame.

No, it's not. I wasn't implying that it is.

So do you have Italian citizenship too ?

No, I'm 100% Italian by heritage and visit basically every other year but I wouldn't get dual citizenship unless I actually lived there.

Too bad... As for me, I have lived in Turin for 4 years, so I guess this plus my parents having Italian citizenship was enough.

Who is next in line if Alfano fails (which, at this point, seems likely)? Is Gasparri in line or how about some younger leaders?

Didn't know about it. After the mess in the Lega, I hope I'll enjoy the mess inside PdL... Grin

Is the M5S even right, left, centrist, or even vagueishly leaning one way, or is it just "we hate all politicians, end of story?"

Definitely the latter.

It's still horrible. This is going to end up below 40%, it's a defeat for politics as a whole.

That share would give them lot of seats in EP. Which group would they join.

The European Federation of Idiots, Retards, Tools, Crazies, Demagogues, and Buffoons, certainly.

It won't end up below 40%,it's 37% now and there is 8 hours of voting tomorrow.
But it's definitely a low turnout.

Bad news that,of all places,Parma is the one with the higher turnout...
Only good thing would be that, after seeing how M5S cannot manage even a medium city, they would lose most (?) credibility.

C'mon, I don't think M5S will pull a win in Parma. I can't get myself to believe enough right-wing voters could seriously vote for a grillist.

Gosh, I really didn't see Parma coming. Shocked This is getting really worrying.

Otherwise, though, it was a great day. Cheesy Fun to see the utter demise of the whole right...

If anyone is interested... Summary of the results, in the 27 provincial capitals up :

Left : 16 (+8) (L'Aquila, Piacenza, Rieti, Genova, La Spezia, Como, Monza, Isernia, Alessandria, Asti, Brindisi, Taranto, Palermo, Carrara, Lucca, Pistoia, Belluno)
Right : 7 (-10) (Catanzaro, Gorizia, Frosinone, Lecce, Trani, Trapani, Verona)
Third Pole : 2 (+1) (Cuneo, Agrigento)
M5S : 1 (+1) (Parma)

Pickups in bold. That's a bit complicated to determine sometimes, though. In Agrigento, the incumbent mayor was elected with the left in 2007, then switched to the PdL and for this election ran in the UdC (transformism FTW !). In Belluno, a PD dissident ran with a "civic list" and won.

Gosh, I really didn't see Parma coming. Shocked This is getting really worrying.

Otherwise, though, it was a great day. Cheesy Fun to see the utter demise of the whole right...

Utter demise? You won local elections in some small towns. That doesn't translate into "utter" demise. You know the next general will be closer and even now, the Left advantage over the Right isn't massive.

You are joking, right ? You got wiped out of nearly all cities in play, often by the first round and polling around 15%. Lega utterly collapsed and lost all 7 runoffs it was facing. If your highest pride is having succeeded in electing a grillist, you know something's wrong... I won't go as far as saying it was a great day for the left on its own, but undoubledly it was a horrible day for the right.

Got "wiped out in all cities in play." I know. I acknowledged that. However, these are mostly small towns and there weren't that many up for grabs.

Maybe but...

So Genoa could be a Right pick up and Palermo should stay put. The rest seem like snooze fests.

So, the left kept Genova, took Palermo, and "the rest" saw the left double the number of cities it held and the right lose half.
