Eliminate :
- 2002 (sorry, but what happened is just sickening)
- 1848 (70%, that sucks epically)
- 1969 (not competitive, depressing 2nd round)

Keep :
- 1974
- 1981
- 1965

BTW, don't forget he manages a fine blog on French electoral geography, including old maps on French plebiscites, for example:

While voting here, do not hesitate to visit it !

Hey, didn't know this one. Seems interesting. Smiley

However, I know this one, which is great : http://welections.wordpress.com/

And well, I don't think it's hackery if I say that 1981 deserves to be the survivor. Besides the fact there was a lot of suspense and emotion (though less than in 1974), the alternance was a decisive step for the 5th Republic, and still structures a great part of the current political life.

Happy birthday Fab, funny it's on July 14. Wink

Eliminate :
1965
1974

Keep :
1981

I'm satisfied because the top 3 is the right one, composed with the three most interesting/important elections. Still, 1981 deserves to win because of the decisive impact it had on the structure of French politics.

The top 2 is the right one, once again. Smiley Now, that's really a hard pick. 1974 is certainly the most thrilling election ever, with a passionating campaign and a close result. As for 1981, it's the election that built the 5th Republic as we know it today, with a strong PS rivalized by a weakening PCF, and the UDF-RPR war, a continuous alternance between right and left. In 1974, there was still the "programme commun", still the gaullist UDR, and the center-right was divided into half a dozen of parties.

Well, maybe it's only for emotional reasons, but I'll take 1981.
