A mix of it all. Smiley

Who's a Southerner (ie which states), who's a Yankee (which states)?

I've heard varying definitions of both.

Anyone who lives in the blue area I consider a yankee. Smiley Maryland is a tossup anymore, sadly. Sad

So you'd consider people in southern illinois/indiana/ohio to be yankees, while those in say Northern Virginia, Missouri to be southerners...interesting...especially for the first part.

Well I can't really break the map down by region, sadly. But it really depends on the person and their attitude.

Once again, whilst I appreciate the humour of parody, this thread is incorrectly placed and doesn't really involve any insightful discussion.

This thread will be deleted in 24 hours.

Why? This is INTERNATIONAL discussion. Unless of course you consider questions about America to not be international.

Ok.  Just checking.  I actually consider myself to be southern, too.   What made you decide to move to Florida?

A certain lady. Wink

back to the main topic of this thread.....

States, do you favor the secession of various states in the South from the United States -and not just their right to?

if so, what kind of a nation would you envision for a reprise of the Confederacy?  namely, what kinds of policies would it pursue in this day and age?  how would society be ordered in an independent South?

As of now I see no reason for secession. I do not support the secession of any modern day state. But I DO believe the right of a state to seperate certainly does exist.

And as this thread now includes some International discussion stuff, there's no need to delete or move it, right?

The Fuhrer will probably delete it anyhow.

I'm thinking of taking a road trip through the South this summer, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Maybe Georgia if I don't run out of money.
Are there any particular sites that you think I should visit that would give me a good sense of what it means to be a southerner?

Go to Tennessee and visit the Shiloh battleground. Go to Chickamauga, GA. Both very solemn places.

Speaking of the holocaust, Hitler was a good christian boy, and Naziism was quite comfortable with German christianity and vice versa.  It was a movement towards 'traditional German values' - sounds familiar eh?

Actually, that's not true at all.  The Nazis suppressed the Christian churches, though they didn't seek to murder all Christians as they did the Jews.  Their goal was to have a state in which Nazism was worshipped as a religion.  They did not do what they did in the name of Christianity.

So goes the story you were taught in American schools.  The Nazis and the christian churches were quite cozy and comfortable with one anther.  It was essentially a nationalistic 'traditional values' movement.

Links? Sources? Or are you just talking out of your arse again?

Sadly ^that is true.  I refer to Niemoeller who said it best

“First they came for the Communists, but I was not a Communist so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists, but I was neither, so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew so I did not speak out. And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me.”

Well I'm taking it a step further than Niemoeller to suggest that most German christians were in fact pleased when the Naziis came for the Communists, Socialists, Trade Unionists, Jews, and Homosexuals.

That is just absolute garbage and revisionist history. To say the least.

As a southern American from Florida maybe you would know this; Are gator steaks good? I've heard they don't taste bad but are sometimes very tough. Please don't tell me they taste like chicken. Smiley

Gator Steaks aren't bad, if they are prepared wrong, or overcooked they can  be tough.  Marinated in Lemon Pepper and grilled, then served with a salad tossed with a nice vinagrette and a baked potato they are good.   Hate to break it to ya.. they don't taste like chicken, they taste like snake... which tastes like .......yep you guessed it.. chicken!

Angus,

sorry..missed the post with all the others going on.  Cedar Key is nice, while not a traditional beach it does have great seafood.  Fort Desoto has nice beaches and trails and access to seafood.  Amelia island is also nice, but a tad pricey.  Pretty much, if you don't go for big names you'll find some nice areas.  Most of the places I've found down here have been accidental.

How long until the South rises again? Southerners seem adamant about the South rising again but it hasn't seem to risen yet.

I don't think that's going to happen again. Smiley And frankly I wouldn't want it to. I enjoy being an American.

Would your answer be the same if Hillary Clinton was elected president?

Yes. But that doesn't mean I'd like the b*tch.

It's true Hitler wasn't Christian, even regardless of his perosnal beliefs he sure wasn't in his deeds. But to say the Nazis were enemies of the Catholics is asinine. Almost all Nazi allies were Catholic. What was Germany's biggest ally in Europe? Italy. And the Germans had plenty of Catholic clerical fascist ran puppet states. Look at the Vichy French or Tizo's regime in Slovakia. And perhaps worse of all was the state set up in Yugoslavia called the "Independent Free State of Croatia" or something like that ran by the Ustase party, which's goal was to eliminate all Orthodox Serbs in Yugoslavia, by either forcing them to convert to Catholicism, expelling them, or killing them. Ever heard of Ante Pavelic? And why did Franco's Spain, a clerically fascist Catholic country harbor ex-Nazi officers?

Italy wasn't really an ally of Germany. The Italians thought they were but Hitler did not think they were. What did Hitler do once given the chance? He took over Italy. Doesn't show much of an alliance there. Hitler thought Mussolini was a joke and had very little respect for him.
