The closest the US has gotten to getting rid of the Electoral College was the proposed Bayh-Celler Amendment in 1970 (which would have selected presidents by the popular vote) responding to the three-way election in 1968. Although this amendment passed the House by the required two-thirds majority, it failed in the Senate after being filibustered.

I'm curious if there were any other proposals, throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, to abolish or reform the Electoral College in some manner?
