For those of you that feel the pressures of modernity acutely, for those of you who have taken heed of the increased crime rate since the halcyon days of the 1980s, I thought I'd share this tidbit, from one of a like-mind as yourselves:

Surely this was a learned fellow, but for the live of me I can't remember who he was - or when he lived. Perhaps one of you can give me the name of this great eschatologist?

Actually, it wasn't Socrates, though the quote has long been misattributed to him.

I find the quote very true and concerning, to be honest.

Oh. I had forgotten that the collapse of ancient Greece was like Wild in the Streets with togas.

Don't be a dolt. Every culture likes to pretend that its "collective morals" decay over time, because that justifies a harsher clamping-down-on of the populace.

I'm just referring to the quote itself in its context, not morals as a whole.  Nor am I suggesting any action be taken.  It is unfortunate the loss of respect as a universal attribute is going by without the blink of an eye.  Any civilized society should have that much and it's something that should transcend politics.

Absolute Republican garbage. Newsflash: there has never been a need, ever, for a "transcendental moral order". In every instance that one has been established throughout history, it has always, without fail, been used as a fallback justification for rapine and pillage in direct contradiction of the allegedly 'universal' principles. As soon as we can learn to walk without this crutch, we will be able to see these snake-oil peddlers out for what they really are.

I don't think the youth is what we need to be scared of, its grown adults that are decaying the morals of our society.  The kids are just fine

And if those so-called "morals" are fragile enough that a period of social liberalization that has only been going on four decades can shatter them, must not we then wonder just how firmly grounded they were in the two preceding millennia?
