ok. we know why reagan won mass in 80, because of john anderson.

but how did reagan win the bay state in 84?

yes, i know mondale was a weak candidate and reagan was a popular incumbent.

but didnt mondale fit massachusetts better than reagan?

where have the reagan democrats gone, al?

actually, boston is rapidly losing its blue collar heritage.  the cost of living is much too high now.  soon all thatll be left in the city of boston is the very rich and the very poor.

They're still there (although not always living in the same places as '84), as you yourself noted a while ago (the split between the two sorts of Democratic legislators. It was in the Gubernatiorial board...) it's just that... well... when was the last time a GOP presidential candidate went after Massachusetts?
There were interesting echos of the possibility in '04 actually; Bush increased his vote markedly in the Boston Metro and came shockingly close to beating Kerry with Catholic voters.

Sad but (in much of the city) true...

It's like that in parts already IIRC

al, you make some good points.

im guessing most of the reagan democrats are located in places like chelsea, charlestown, lowell, and worcester.  those are generally the areas that have the conservative leaners in the legislature.

as for dukes county, im pretty sure those folks still routinely vote republican for local offices.
