I won't pretend to know much about French politics, but am I correct in observing that an election in three weeks would be pretty bad for the left, especially with the two-round system making vote splitting (RN+LREM get into second round after PS and LFI split the left-wing vote, etc) a serious concern and PS's outstanding performance in the EU elections making Melenchon a lot less of an undisputed left-wing leader?

The left is definitely screwed if it doesn't unify fast - which is of course going to be a huge challenge. The NUPES took 12 days to negotiate. We obviously won't have that much time now. And it's going to be difficult to deal with a Mélenchon who still thinks he owns the left despite his party having been halved since 2022. The good news is that all the leaders have called for unity, and seem to understand the gravity of the situation. Whether that's enough motivation to come to a reasonable agreement, we shall find out soon.

Well, the good news is that left-wing leaders are already meeting today. We'll see what comes out of that. The candidacy deadline is this Friday, so it's a good thing everyone sees the urgency.

Are there any particular disagreements that you could see sinking the entire NUPES 2.0 project? I'd think Ukraine might be up there, but again I don't know much about internal French politics.

Not trying to defend Macron here (I'd vote for the Popular Front unless my constituency's candidate was from LFI) but it seems that the Macronistas are the only coalition that hasn't had some form of significant chaos.

Anyone with more knowledge of French politics know any more about the RE campaign?

Is this Mbappe the guy who burst into laughter when someone suggested him that private jets are not eco-friendly?

Yep. Also the call to vote against generic "extremists" is more of an echo of Macronist rhetoric which for the past few years has been both-sidesing between RN and FI (and sadly they seem to have actually convinced their electorate that Mélenchon is just as dangerous as Le Pen). So this is very unlike Marcus Thuram's statement yesterday which actually singled out RN as the real threat.

In the EU elections what percent of Melenchons votes were not student or Muslim votes ?

I mean, hard to say exactly, but almost certainly more than half. While those two groups are among the strongest for FI, they're also small minorities. FI couldn't have polled as high as 10% out of those two groups only, especially in a low-turnout election.

How do Muslims usually vote in France, anyway?

Frankly at this point I would hold my nose and vote RN- the rape of that 12 year old Jewish girl was the last straw for me. Melenchon and Macron don't seem to care all that much. Le Pen doesn't either but she at least pretends to, which is better than nothing.

How do you have an L avatar and somehow prefer both Le Pen and NFP within the last week over Macronism?

Because I've shifted politically over the four years I've been here? And I forgot my Atlas login so I can't change my political compass scores?
