The rules need to be changed in some way to make this more fun...

What might be good would be the same sort of rules as in "...Kevin Bacon", where the actors in each step have to appear in the same movie together.  In this case, they'd have to appear in the same election together (or something else similarly close, such as being closely related...or in the case of foreign leaders, something like appearing at a summit together?).  Both being "elected to the Senate"--even at the same time--just doesn't cut it.

Blerpiez' recent one is a pretty good one, I think.

As for Jfern's one:

1) Robert Morris and James Madison both attended the Constitutional Convention and signed the Constitution.
2) Bernie Sanders attended James Madison High School.  (Urgh...but it's pretty impossible otherwise to get from one to the other otherwise).
3) Bernie Sanders and Richard Sugarman were roommates. (Thanks Wikipedia!)
4) Richard Sugarman and Joe Lieberman were roommates.
5) Joe Lieberman lost the 2004 Democratic Nomination to John Kerry
6) John Kerry's presidential campaign was supported financially by George Soros

William Wirt and James Garfield.

(In response to Joe:  I think what he meant by his earlier comment was that things like "George Washington and George Wallace both ran for President" are unacceptable, while "George Wallace and Richard Nixon ran against each other in 1968" are.)

1) Earl Dodge ran as the Prohibition Party's candidate against Al Gore in 2000.
2) Al Gore and Tommy Lee Jones were roommates at Harvard.
3) Tommy Lee Jones and Clint Eastwood both appeared in Space Cowboys.

Bah, King beat me to it.  Posting this for kicks.

William Jennings Bryan and Ralph Nader.

Thoroughly abusing Ronald Reagan's acting career and imdb...

1) William Jennings Bryan was (effectively) portrayed by Fredric March in the 1960 film, Inherit the Wind.
2) Fredric March and Virginia Mayo were both in the 1947 film, "The Best Years of Our Lives."
3) Virginia Mayo and Ronald Reagan were both in the 1952 film, "She's Working Her Way Through College"
4) Ronald Reagan challenged Gerald Ford for the 1976 Presidential Nomination
5) Gerald Ford and Bob Dole were running-mates in 1976.
6) Bob Dole and Ralph Nader both ran for President in 1996.
