Taft makes it competitive (unlike RL 1952), but it's still a convincing victory for Ike.

Whether the Republicans would have a chance in '56 (who would they nominate?) is another question entirely.

The same Lee Harvey Oswald thing wasn't a historical necessity, and certainly wouldn't have happened under a different President.

The Republicans would have won in 1960...if not, I don't think they'd last until 1968.  (Imagine the effect of a Goldwateresque landslide on a party that hadn't won since 1928...it'd be like 1852 was to the Whigs...)
