CORNYN: “It doesn’t look like the trigger is going to work, according to the parliamentarian. So we have an alternative, frankly, tax increase we don’t want to do.”

Edit: So to get votes for the bill, the tax cut may not be as dramatic?

What does this all mean

It means corker can say "at least I tried" while still voting yes

I think it means they're going to make some of the tax cuts less extreme to get this bill to be deficit neutral, or something to that effect.

Cornyn says Corker want MORE than $350 billion in higher taxes as "he's latched on to the" JCT score showing $1 trillion in red ink after growth.

Good luck...

Collins may flip if she realizes the effect on coverage is too great. Or some darkhorse like Daines or Lankford could torpedo it. It's not safe when every Senator is the deciding vote.

Why would a supposed moderate hero like Collins be in favor of destroying Obamacare? I thought the mandate repeal would totally turn her into a solid no vote.

Because she was promised that Alexander-Murray would also be voted on to counteract the effect of repealing the mandate.

Lots of yelling on the senate floor.

Also, Rubio arguing for a 22% corporate tax but made a point to talk about how everyone before this bill said a 25% rate was the gold standard.

The motion by Sen. Stabenow to send the bill back to committee has failed by a vote of 45-55. Manchin/Heitkamp/Donnelly defect.

Wtf? Why did those three hayseeds defect?

Because they're tired of voting for the same thing over and over again.

I'm eager to see whats actually in this tax bill. I think the corporate tax cut is too deep but I still think a cut is a good thing. Collins salt amendment should also make things easier for middle class families, although I have my doubts it survives Paul Ryan.

Susan Collins amendments make me feel a little better about this bill.

Susan Collins amendments make me feel a little better about this bill.

What are in her amendments?

Is SALT being restored?

Up to $10,000.

Susan Collins has a verbal promise from McConnell with a transcript to pass Alexander-Murray. So theres that...

This bill also still has to go to conference. If Collins amendments are all stripped out, I could see her voting no on the new bill. If Corker votes no tonight, then he'll probably vote no on the conference'd bill. I'm trying to figure out who the third no vote would come from.

Susan Collins is officially a yes

Does the Alabama race even matter now regarding tax reform?

Like I said, the bill still has to go to conference. If it comes out with all of Collins amendments stripped, then her yes vote could be in jeopardy.

McConnell and Ryan have come out in favor of ending the Paygo cuts that will hurt entitlement programs  due to the tax bill.

I hope they follow through with this.

To be honest, I'm pretty sure Corker got the go ahead from McConnell to vote against the bill. If they need a yes vote from him, he would vote yes.

Regardless of how you feel about its contents, this bill's passage has been an utter disaster for republicans. They handled this worse than democrats did on O-Care. Republicans have gotten lazy since winning both house of congress and its going to cost them immensely in 2018.

As I mentioned before, the biggest worry about going to conference should be Susan Collins amendments. If they get stripped out, they could lose her vote. Her+Corker and a senator Jones could kill this. Not likely, but I think a real possibility.

The AL election won't be certified until early January.  At the breakneck pace the GOP is pushing to get this done, it likely won't matter if Jones win.

Then I'm not sure where the third no vote would cone from tbh.

In their rush to pass this scam, the Senate GOP didn't realize they defacto repealed literally every corporate deduction: http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2017/12/senate-gop-accidentally-killed-all-corporate-tax-deductions.html

This is why you should take more than 2 weeks to completely restructure an entire tax system.

Affluent *liberal* blue staters, too.

I hope they move to Florida.

Florida and North Carolina seen to be the go moving destinations in my experience.

Collins did say she wasn't a yes on the final bill. Collins + Corker + Huh = Failed bill.

= House passing the Senate bill

I'd argue that the freedom caucus could derail that notion.
