Here is the map that Rachel Maddow showed on her show from the Kinsa Thermometer

What is this supposed to show?

Spikes in the reporting of flu-like symptoms, which could, according to epidemiologists like the UK’s Prof Chris Whitty, be considered to likely be mild case of COVID-19.

It’s less about these infected people, and more about how widely the virus has likely disseminated in the US.

It would be surprising if it maps that, since per capita confirmed cases has been relatively low in Florida, and much higher in Washington state.
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/coronavirus-us-cases.html

Comparing Washington and Florida is (ahem) apples and oranges.  There's a vast difference in testing rates.

Waffle House closing 365 locations, the most in its history

For those who don't know Waffle House, this is a big deal.  The chain stays open 24/7, even through extreme circumstances to the maximum extent possible.  FEMA actually uses an informal "Waffle House Index" to measure the impact of a disaster on a local community.

A lot of this is due to increased availability of testing.  But it's still terrifying.

What Georgia’s mayors and county leaders were told about the pandemic.

Quote
On Tuesday, we told you that the Georgia Municipal Association had recommended that all 538 cities in the state declare public health care emergencies in an effort to tamp down the coronavirus pandemic.

The GMA did so after a Monday afternoon online presentation by Dr. Carlos del Rio, the executive associate dean for Emory at Grady Health System, aimed at mayors, city managers, county commission chairs and county managers across the state.

The article embeds the PowerPoint presentation used and has a link to the audio recording.  I've read the presentation and it's well worth a look.

What's the buzz been around the coronavirus down in Georgia, GM?

Don't hear a ton about it.

It seems to be a mix between those who are taking it very seriously and those who think it's nothing to worry about and/or a hoax.  (As you might expect, there's a high correlation between the latter view and Trump support.)  Most cities, counties, and the state have taken some actions, but I worry that they've been too little and too late.  In particular, I'm concerned that the city of Atlanta will become the next hot spot.  The mayor ordered shelter in place earlier this week, but it's already been reported that ICU beds in the city are near capacity.

Georgia school systems have moved online until the end of March, with spring break following the first week of April.  At present, many have plans to reopen the schools after that (although I suspect this will change).

This terrific film, with its backstory of a deadly virus pandemic deliberately created to allow the seizure of power by an authoritarian regime (to be absolutely clear, I'm definitely NOT suggesting that's the cause of the current virus!), has been on my mind a lot since the start of this crisis.  I've been thinking of re-watching it, but it's so dark I'm not sure it's a good idea right now.

No many the quantity of threads, this is still an overblown reaction. Glad Trump is waking up to the economic consequences.

First post in and of course it's this guy and his "hot takes"

Guess I'll be avoiding these COVID-19 megathreads for good now
Just out him on Ignore.

Almost 1000 fewer new cases in New York today compared to yesterday. No wonder Trump's approval ratings are rising.

This may set a new low for the intelligence level of a post.  It should be measured in negative numbers.

A woman purposely coughed on $35,000 worth of food at a Pennsylvania grocery store, police said. She likely faces criminal charges for coughing, one of the primary ways the novel coronavirus spreads.

The unnamed woman entered small grocery chain Gerrity's Supermarket in Hanover Township and started coughing on produce, bakery items, meat and other merchandise, chain co-owner Joe Fasula wrote on Facebook.

Another big spike in new infections today in Italy.  Even the most patient people on this board said we should wait until March 24 to start to see a decline.  It’s now March 26, and still no sign the lockdown is working to reduce the spread.
"Up then down then up then down"  increases in infections/deaths is - QED by math - less growrth (not as bad as) exponential growth. There is a very good chance that Italy would still be exponentially growing right now, OR that it would be in decline after a HUGE recent peak that caused maybe 1500 or 2000 deaths per day for 2 or 3 days during almost total hospital collapse.

Also worth noting that this comes at a time when the worldwide infection rate is still growing exponentially:

Italy didn't increase their reported infections enough to pass China today... Which means that the US is probably going to pass both Italy and China tomorrow, and Italy will never have the most reported infections globally (except arguably tomorrow between when Italy reports a new total and when the US reports a new total).

It is a highly misleading stats (or, you should think that CFR is somehow 10 to 20 times worse in Italy/Spain/France than in US) , but I'm sure that Unbiased Media will provide a full context and explain it to Americans. Ah, whom am I kidding? The people, whom Trump calls the Enemy of the People, will keep defrauding American People by leaving out these "petty" details.

That's it.  You've usually provided enough posts of value that I've resisted putting you on Ignore despite your constant trolling.  But lately you make almost every one of your posts into an anti-media diatribe.  Your signal/noise ratio has dropped below the minimum threshold, and I'm done with it.  See ya.
