The Ukrainians have been able to conduct some successful localized counterattacks in the northern and northwestern suburbs of Kyiv as well as in the outskirts of Kharkiv over the past 48 hours. At this point, I am wondering if the Russian military can even surround and siege Kyiv effectively. Even if they were successful, I imagine the parameter would be incredibly porous, given the Russian tendency to stick to the major roadways thus far. For the sake of everyone in the region, I hope we'll never have to find out.

This isn't something you would be doing if you were certain of imminent victory.

Re: the Polish airplane dilemma, can someone please explain to me what line we're supposedly at risk of crossing that we haven't crossed already by sending thousands of anti-tank missiles and other munitions to Ukraine since the war started? If NATO pilots can't fly them in, simply allow the Ukrainian pilots to take a short vacation to Poland, Estonia, Germany or wherever.

It's sort of hilarious to watch Medvedev's repeated warmongering since it's so obviously a vain attempt to regain Putin's favor. His performance at the meeting of the Russian Security Council right before the war was a sight to see. I wouldn't be surprised if he's openly advocating slinging nukes by next week.

Allegedly, a munitions dump exploded in Belgorod, Russia. There are unconfirmed reports that a Ukrainian missile struck it but an accident resulting from the mishandling of the ammo may just be as likely.

Some extremely upsetting imagery is coming out of the recently liberated suburbs of Kyiv. A lot of civilians - mostly men but some women and children as well - killed in apparent executions. Some of the dead are just scattered across roadways and sidewalks while others appear to have been partially buried in mass graves. Given the scale, it's difficult to imagine that this is just random wanton violence. There are unconfirmed reports that Russian troops were under order to kill all 'fighting age' men regardless of whether they took up arms or not. Whatever the reason, I think this makes any sort of negotiated settlement less likely in the short-term as Ukrainians will (understandably) harden their resolve.

Wasn't half the reason the Russians withdrew from the Kyiv Oblast because they were having difficulty resupplying and sustaining so many disconnected offensive fronts? And now they're going to open another front that's going to be arguably even more difficult to resupply than the offensives they launched from Belarus?

I am not calling out anyone here specifically, but it takes a special kind of person to look at these horrific acts and directly or indirectly minimize them by saying something along the lines of "well, I count only 30 corpses from that one video" or "actually, this isn't as bad as [insert previous atrocity].

Instead of getting into a tit for tat about which massacre is/was worse, acknowledge the pain and suffering of the victims and allow the survivors agency to express their shock and anger without critiquing their understandable desire to place these horrors into perspective as they talk about them.
