You can thank the Republican Party and their love of stupidity for Mississippi being #48 on this list.

Really, the problems with public education have one root and one root only: the insane decision to tie funding to property taxes. Kids in poor areas are screwed from the get go. I'm surprised Pennsylvania isn't lower, it has a Democratic governor but one of the most cancerous obstructive Republican congresses in the country which consistently blocks education funding.
