RIP Nigerien democracy. Yet another Sahel country falling to a Russia-aligned military junta, it is very sad and obviously no one will care.

The arrest of Ousmane Sonko should highlight how there are no sides here for democracy or security, but of self-interested elites garnering their power from guns brandished in and with caveats of implicit payment from colonial authorities.

The thread shall reflect that shift.

Not the first time Sonko has been arrested, but I read that the government also dissolved PASTEF, which is a pretty troubling sign.

I just saw an article that informed me that a few days ago Sierra Leone arrested a group of high-ranking officers who were supposedly plotting a coup and using upcoming peaceful protests as a cover. As a consequence, President Julius Maada Bio chose against attending the ECOWAS summit in Abuja. Sierra Leone has been a pretty stable democracy ever since its unspeakably brutal civil war ended in 2002; Maada Bio was elected to a second term just a couple months ago amidst alleged irregularities and inconsistencies. West African crisis indeed...

It's especially curious to see this from a Brazilian leftist of all nationalities and political leanings. I'm not going to accept the idea that it's morally neutral for a cadre of generals to overthrow an elected President (an elected socialist President, no less) no matter how many times you throw around the phrase "Marvel movie" or use "liberal" as a contentless snarl term.

Quote from: State Department grey suit, 1973
But it’s always funny to me how “Liberal Leftists” are quick to immediately dismiss the complexities of these geopolitical matters (Goulart took the side of Cuba and opposed the embargo, he dealt with the Soviet Bloc while limiting opportunities for US-sponsored development) and simplify it all as Democracies = Good Guys; Non-Democracies = Evil Villains. You can always cut the “liberal” and keep just the “leftist” with them.
