I heard alot of latinos near the border especially in texas work in border patrol and immigration, So the dem rhetoric against it pushed them away as alot of them look at it as employment
This may also be an overlooked factor in the rural swing against Democrats increasingly in favour of criminal justice reform (although a long, long way from the most significant, I should add). Certain rural communities benefit from prison growth in their economies and are voting their interest when they vote for more incarceration-friendly policies.
If this is true then it's awfully depressing to think about whole communities that are so reliant on something as morbid as increasing incarceration and private prisons
It's like any other complex. The military-industrial complex used to get lots of popular support because of manufacturing jobs (in the UK, the socialist/socdem party supports building nukes but not actually using them because of this) and you can point to similar dynamics in big pharma's sway.
I agree it's particularly nasty considering it depends on directly and comprehensively stripping way people's freedoms and then using their unpaid labour, but plenty of voters aren't going to think that far down the road. They'll just look at their pocketbook and buy into the messaging to avoid harder truths.
