The bump can still happen.

I don’t want it to, but it’s very possible he comes out of the hospital looking sympathetic and idiot swing voters decide it’s patriotic to support the president.

This would be reflected in his personal favorability numbers. If he's ill enough to gain that kind of sympathy, then he's likely so ill that he is not seen as fit to handle the job of the presidency, which would tank his percent of the vote in the poll.
