Is it because the ACLU advocates expansion of government in order to ensure the protection of civil liberties?

For example, if a company fires a worker who happens to be part of a protected class, will the ACLU not back that worker in a discrimination lawsuit against the company?

That's part of it, but even if the ACLU's case does not involve expansion of government, many conservatives (despite claiming to value individualism) will put religious standards, personal disapproval, or social conformity above individual rights.
