I get your point but 8 years ago? Obama's high profile and universally lauded convention speech was 8 years ago, he was about to be elected US Senator in a landslide, and plenty of people were saying he'd be the next president, or at least a president at some point. He wasn't exactly "an obscure black State Senator" then. This type of thing made sense in 2008 but a lot of time has passed since then.

Elizabeth Warren is the only person being elected as a new senator/governor this year that I could see winning the nomination for president in 2016, and that's only if President Romney is popular and Democrats put up an idealistic sacrificial lamb. And that's pretty unlikely too. Obama was very unique.
