My parents were both children of immigrants, both born and raised on North Dakota farms. When she moved to the "city" in the mid-'50's, my mother became a cook and baker at different restaurants on and off till her retirement. My dad, after leaving the farm to serve in WWII, became a master electrician, opened his own electrical company with a brother-in-law and wired half the buildings in the town where I was born before he retired. My parents, during their retirement, tried to manage a couple of restaurants and lost almost all their life savings in the process. During their marriage, they also raised seven boys.
