Surely you've flown/transferred flights in Frankfurt at least once, of all the travel you've done.

FRA/FIAP = one of the worst airports in the world, especially for those of us in the "show-up-5-hours-early-before-an-international-departure" category, because there's no grub/shopping beyond the security gates.   Unless that's changed recently.

No, never, and it sounds like luckily for me. I've found a couple of European airports to be like this, where there is stuff beyond security but not beyond immigration (Copenhagen and Lisbon come to mind). I actually was supposed to transfer next year through FRA on my JFK-SIN flight, but Singapore Airlines just changed it to a direct flight instead. Phew!

After like my third time flying out of FRA, I eventually learned my lesson and just started hanging out in that weird KPMG spaceship-egg building for several hours beforehand.  Lots of decent places to eat, read the paper, and people-watch before heading to the terminals.

How does one "visit" the airport in Split but not actually flown in/out of there (that was actually a major NATO air hub to/from my deployments from Germany to the Balkans back in the day)

Doesn't Split remind you of El Paso, but with cobblestoned streets and a beach?
