Nominations for Governor & Lieutenant Governor

In 8 states (Alaska, Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin), candidates for lieutenant governor and governor within one party are subject to separate primaries, but run together as a ticket in the general election. Does this not feel illogical? For example, a stronger candidate for governor could be saddled with a weaker candidate for lieutenant governor through no fault of their own (or vice versa I suppose, though the gubernatorial nominee should matter more). It feels more sensible to either allow the candidate for governor to choose a running mate or for the elections for these offices to be separately (as is already done in many other states). What do you all think?
