America was not ready for the leftist ideals.

The Thomas Eagleton thing hurt him.

Nixion ran a Obama like campaign.

One side note on the Eagleton thing..

It is said that had that been handled better  McGovern could have won  few more states.

You have to remember the democratic party was still bluedogish at this time.

Watergate sure as heck didn't hurt Nixon's margin any.
