Don't forget, Romney first has to win the  nomination from these ideological wackos and right wing nut jobs that currently comprise a great deal the Republican base.

After winning the nomination, he can then gravitate skillfully back to the center, which is where this election will be won or lost. 

With this stragegy, he will be able to attract independents and moderates, while at the same time maintaining the vast majority of the conservative voters, as they will not be voting for Obama.

The other aspect of this strategy, of course, is that a credible independent conservative candidate does not emerge.
