Social media is an area that needs regulating and national security interests to be protected in.

Oh certainly and regardless of one's views regarding events in recent times OTL, the potential has been established and we know various regimes put a lot of effort into manipulating social media to influence democratic nations towards their hostile geopolitical and geo-strategic direction. Insert preferred foil regime of choice for one's side, the same concerns apply.
