I imagine that a good bit of the debt is covid response. Frankly, we should be able to sustain a sudden surge in debt just like we did in World War II, provided that immediately afterwards you get serious about reducing it. This means that all programs must be funded, no deficit funded tax cuts and avoiding deficit spending except for emergencies/recessions.

The tacit acceptance of long term deficits in both good times and bad is what is dangerous. As long as you get serious though, and demonstrate credibility, the financial markets should give us more slack then what Italy got.

Bottom line, we don't need an austerity plan, we also don't need to stick our heads in the sand and pretend everything is fine. We need a solvency plan.
