Probably because minorities started voting Democrat in overwhelming numbers because of the Southern strategy and not because they agree with the party on every issue.
You also have seen moderate and conservative whites becoming Republicans (especially in the South) while black or Hispanic moderates are still Democrats.
Nonwhite Democrats are often more religious than white liberals.

Basically this (the same applies to women, gay people, and some other groups to varying degrees), although the extent to which the premise of this thread is even the case is exaggerated. Sanders, for example, lost most minorities because he was weak on racial issues, not because they thought he was too left-wing.
These ones seem to hit pretty well. This question wasn't meant to be as much about Sanders(an old white guy from Vermont running on (mostly white) college kid issues doing poorly among minorities isn't exactly strange) as much as most of the most liberal(and not just in the crazy Steiner way) people being white. I guess having to struggle just to survive makes you A. grounded against moonbattery, and B. not as interested in social issues(other then race).
As it happens, American liberalism and American conservatism are both ideologies born from wealth that cater to rather particular concerns. This is a big part of why there is so much discontent on both the left and the right now; the parties represent elite interests that don't touch on the issues that most people face.
