And I'm even sicker of the counter-argument "Oh, a truly religious person, wouldn't have committed such a severe crime." Probably some truth to that, but a) this goes beyond freedom of religion. That's just the stepping stone used to pass the right decision; and b) how are you holier to pass that judgment.
The idea that we can infringe on someone's expression as a punishment for committing a crime sounds like something out of
1984. I know it isn't a perfect analogy or even a great one, but the right to your own beliefs has to be something unalienable. To not permit such is dehumanizing.
