In 1968, Richard Nixon chooses Governor Mark Hatfield as his runningmate. Though this runs off some conservatives to Wallace, Nixon is able to pull out a closer win than OTL. When Nixon begins his more hardline stances on Vietnam, Vice President Hatfield is angered by this and in 1971 resigns. Hatfield would then run for the Republican nomination against Nixon in 1972 and after a hardhitting campaign, Nixon wins the nomination. Hatfield doesn't stop his campaign and converts it to an Independent-Republican campaign for President.

Former Vice President Hubert Humphrey runs better in 1972 overall than OTL and positions himself as the candidate with the most experience. This moves works with voters and is nominated over Wallace and McGovern.

So who wins? Does Nixon get taken down in '72? Discuss please.
