I have long maintained that Trump's "promise" to bring back MFG jobs to America was a key reason for his 2016 EC win, as well as major swings in heavily MFG sectors / cities / regions.
Trump performed well among not only actual MFG workers, but also retirees in sectors / regions most heavily impacted by the loss of MFG jobs, and in some cases even the decimation of entire local economies.
Trump's failed promise in this regard was a key factor in his erosion of support starting over a Year ago, even prior to COVID-19 & protests for racial justice and equality in policing policies transformed the terrain of the 2020 GE PRES campaign.
As I have mentioned previously elsewhere, even in sectors where there has been an increase in MFG jobs and "jobs coming back", they generally pay significantly lower than they had previously, as I can attest to as worker in a large facility with a significant MFG component.
