Merle Haggard's cover of a classic Woody Guthrie Song from the Great Depression era: "Jesus Christ", which is totally appropriate in this Holiday Season.

Merle was not only an extremely talented musician, with a fascinating back-story, but also initially a servant to the Nashville Country Music slopping out "hit singles", that included many songs that weren't totally in line with what he actually believed.

As the hits kept racking up, his artistic freedom grew, and as a former "Okie" was able to cover a song from another fellow Okie, and pulling up an old skool gospel with a Woody twist....

This song is still relevant today regardless of if sung by Woody Guthrie or Merle Haggard, and regardless of religious denominations, it still speaks about the political and economic realities in the USA in 2019>2020

Man---- totally bummed out that I didn't see Green Day live back in '90 before they became popular when they played at a House Party for a Birthday of someone I knew through the scene.

My recollection is that I thought they "Weren't really Punk Rock" even though I was invited to the gig, which was an event of <100 people in someone's basement in the "Downtown" area of a City which was at that time of some 35k people....

Thanks for the memories!!!!

"Managua, Nicaragua" by Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians.  I had the vinyl of this when I was a kid.

Always love the Vintage Collections....

Watched and listened to it and it actually tells a story about American Economic Imperialism in Central America in the '50s /'60s....

Doesn't really tell the story of the Somoza Dictatorship, but rather a place where American Men can take a "Call of Booty", cheat on their wives, and everything is all great through the rose tinted cameras and memories of an era where tour boats might come to call, and all of the American $$$ are getting sucked up into the greedy hands of a Dictator, that became so unpopular that there was a massive revolution in the '70s, where even the Oligarchs and key leaders within the Catholic Church joined the "Rebels" against the "Empire" (Star Wars style)....

Let's listen to a bit of Andean Folk Music after to remind us about Chile and Argentina....

You are correct... she is not guilty of the Sins of the GrandFather....

You are also correct that it was much easier to obtain American Residency and Political Immigration Status if you were Nicaraguan or Cuban, than if you were Salvadoran, Guatemalan, or Honduran....

Fuzzy, you are obviously on top of the history of Latino Immigration into America from the late '70s to the late '80s.... Wink

You must have been in Houston Texas, where I saw one of the top Latino artists play live in Concert back in the Mid 2010s...

You actually get it much butter than so many of the other Anglo Posters on the Forum....

Peace, Love, Merry Christmas & Happy Chanukah!!!!

Christ on a Crutch: "Nation of Sheep" / "Sleep of Reason"

A Hardcore Metal Peace Punk band out of Seattle, which was the PacNW sound of the time.

Their first LP came out shortly after Iraq War 1.0

Friend of mine whose Mom lived in Seattle first got me into the band when he played the underground footage of some "house party" with (80) Punkers moshing, then bought the vinyl the next year, which would likely sell for $150+ on Amazon or eBay...

Will be playing the full album shortly once my wife gets off of work... Wink

You can get cheaper versions of songs and the album on various other formats.... Support the artists and if you like the sound buy it, as opposed the canned crap that so many other musical artists sell these dayz....

Naturally in this time of crisis.... my thought sprung to mind of a Classic OC "Hardcore Punk" band from way back in the early '80s.

Although I could have played a "clean cut", instead decided to post a video of them playing live in some record store in SoCal....

The Adolescents: Amoeba

"Amoeba amoeba
Amoeba amoeba
Amoeba amoeba
Amoeba amoeba
We are the scientists in the lab
Looking through a microscope
The little glass slides they never lie
How can this small mind cope?
I've never seen anything like it before
This amoeba's got a mind of it's own
But don't turn your back you stupid science world
This is reaching for the telephone
Amoeba amoeba
Amoeba amoeba
Amoeba amoeba
Amoeba amoeba
A one celled creature a one celled thing
It hardly knows it's alive
You're better off dead if you only knew
Your growing life is taking a dive
I've never seen anything like it before
This amoeba's got a mind of…
"

Please support the works of the original artists, as I have over the years....

John Prine  not only tested positive for COVID-19. but it also appears that based upon his Medical Conditions and Statements from his family.... this looks bad indeed.

Not only is John Prine one my favorite singer-songwriter cross-over music folk/Country cross-over artists of all time, and as a Vietnam-Vet and postal worker wrote many classic songs when he was "discovered" way back in the days...

Vietnam Vet, Postal Worker from an Appalachian-American background.

Likely not a big name for many of you but...

Naturally in what appears like it will be the next Great Depression in the era of the Trump CoronaVirus blues, naturally listening to some Woody Guthrie....

First song talks a bit about homeless in the Great Depression in the US:

Woody Guthrie: "I Ain't got no Home"

Second song talks about a major medical sickness causing massive death among working americans....

Woody Guthrie: "Dust Pneunomia Blues"

John Prine's condition may have stabilized based upon what I heard on CNN earlier today from a DEM House member who is a friend... still "pray for the best" (If any of y'all are prayer people), "hope for the best", and prepare for the worst....

Regardless, I would strongly encouraged all of y'all to check out Prine's tunes because not only is he a rock and roll legend, but also he might be one of the first Rock 'N Roll legends to potentially die at the hands of this Pandemic....

Naturally...  Wink

It's been a Labor Movement Protest Anthem for decades since the Coal Miner Strikes in Harlan County back in '31...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Which_Side_Are_You_On%3F

The question should be which is the best version of the song which has been covered by so many artists over the Years?

Hadn't really listened to the Almanac Singers original version from '41 before.

Definitely fond memories of listening to this song for the first time when I was a young child in the '80s from Pete Seeger....

Naturally one of my favorites is definitely Billy Bragg during the "Pit Strikes" against Thatcher in the '80s....

Dead Prez is certainly one of those hip-hop bands who convert the song from more of a traditional country-folk-rock type song, while still keeping it truth to the communities....

Here is a hip-hop song I just listened to a few minutes ago...

Yung Gritty is an up and coming Hip-Hop Artist....

https://undergroundhiphopblog.com/news/diss-tracks-between-so-cal-latino-rappers-annimeanz-yung-gritty-go-public/

Listen to Yung Gritty... on "El Uno"

Still, these are the beats that are hitting the Barrios of the Inland Empire, not to mention Metro Los Angeles Proper....

The COVID-19 song reminds me a bit of some Black Hip-Hop artists over the Years in the early '90s with an old skool style mixing box, but keeping it real and topical, and representing a "New Wave" style of Latino Hip-Hop...

Reminds a little bit of this Gang Starr song in certain ways...

Naturally, now that Trump is looking at bringing "foreign workers" back to the United States, it is only appropriate to listen to one of the top Latino Artists from Latin America, who I saw live in Houston back in the days live in a giant rock convention center....

The stadium was filled with over 15k people, and the crowd went wild when this song was played....

My Latina girlfriend at the time explained to me that "El Mojado" roughly translated to "wetbacks", and this was a song of Liberation, within an audience that was overwhelmingly a mixture of Mexican and Central Americans within the Obama era, where much had been promised, but little delivered...

It's a good song so check it out, and likely for most of you Anglo Atlas posters you have no idea who the eff this guy is....

John Prine just passed away today as a direct result of CoVid-19 complications...

RIP... John Prine

He's not going to be the last to pass of musical and other artistic legends, but please to help support the family and the major contribution that he has provided to American Music History, please purchase his albums and works, listen to the tunes of a man who contributed so much to our country and is now deceased at the hands of this disease, which so heavily is hitting our most vulnerable populations, as well as many who are seemingly healthy but are carrying the disease and acting like this is not a real deal....

Was crying for John Prine's family when I heard the news a few hours ago, and if it hasn't hit home yet in your communities, it is coming for you....

This is not a joke and most likely we will lose more Americans in the next few Months than during the entire Vietnam War....
