I think the show's lost it's way. Back in the golden age, there was real tension about the world in general, but other than the 2000 season, which was genuinely exciting if a bit gimmicky, these last few seasons have put too much focus on winning the election, rather than winning the leadership of the free world.
I know they tried to do the new Soviets with the islamists, but it was always pretty clear the good guys would win. The great thing about the Soviet seasons was that you never knew if the next season would be the last one, now we just assume they'll have another, then another, then another, with the samecharacters fronting up over and over again.
The gender and ethnic diversity recently has been good though, but I don't think it's nearly as emotive as the tension of it coming down to the character who would stop the destruction of the world. Such a shame they flubbed the 1988 season.
