a muon is some sort of subatomic particle with a negative charge if I have my things straight.

Indeed it is. It's like an electron but 200 time more massive. For years it made no sense in the grand scheme of particle and the physicist I. I. Rabi was quoted as saying "Who ordered the muon?" Now it is one of the most important markers of other rare physics such as the top quark and Higgs boson.

It was based on my research and doubled as my license plate.

In return, I was a fan of The Stars Our Destination one of the great Chicago bookstores that has gone away.
