I'm glad to see this is still a thread, since I like to post my additions as a collector of counties. I can give a summary of travels so far in this crazy year for travel.

January - business trip to CA
February - mini road trip to Savannah GA

pandemic hits

March/April - a total of 5 counties in IL the fewest in a similar period in over a decade
May - a day trip to hike in a reopened IL state park and a day trip to see family in an outdoor socially distance setting in WI
June - a weekend trip to MI newly reopened with fairly strict COVID protocols
July - a weekend trip to state parks in southern IL

August - took a COVID test with a negative result to be able to fly to AK and visit my freshman roomate and tour the interior. It was my 50th state to visit. I also a weekend the MI UP which was still showing low rates.

September - after self-quarantining for 2 weeks I drove to NH to help my son move into his apartment for grad school. The apartment is in MA, but their Covid rules prevented me from staying overnight so I took day trips from NH to help him move in. Late in the month I visited a friend in northern MN, and from there drove across the state to see some brilliant fall colors along the border.

October - a day trip to an IL state park to enjoy more fall colors

November - a trip to NW AR residing in a fully equipped condo with day trips to see more fall colors, and conduct some business and see family with appropriate distancing. I'm now self-quarantining to get ready for a Thanksgiving week visit to family in NH.

Here's a map of my travels. Red and magenta are counties first visited in 2020. Blue and green are counties visited in a prior year as well as 2020. Red and blue counties were slept in overnight during 2020. Yellow are prior counties only visited by airport/boat/rail coach.

It’s a fun thread. I would’ve had a lot to add if I had been able to go on my trip in late March/early April. I was planning on flying out from Sacramento to Columbus, OH (with a layover in Dallas) to drive a UHaul with my friend who was moving from Dayton, OH to Salt Lake City. I think it would’ve been something like 5 new states and 60-100 new counties. The exact number would’ve depended on the route. Also missed the chance to see my favorite bird at the Columbus Zoo. Damn Covid.

I hear you. I had plans for a great trip out west in May. It included renting a car in Phoenix for a dollar a day, during to a conference in Vegas, then to a resort near Bend OR, then to another conference outside of Seattle. By moving the rental car from Phoenix to Seattle, the rate was near zero. Who knows when those spring rental car deals will return.

CA: Santa Clara, San Mateo, Alameda, San Francisco

NY: Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Putnam, Columbia, Dutchess

Not counting counties I just had a layover in while flying.

But if you weren't in those layover counties, and you weren't in the air, where were you at the time?

Barring an unplanned trip in the next two weeks, this should be my final edition for the year. I visited a total of 509 counties, 123 for the first time.

I’m considering been to as actually spent at least a collective 10 hours in. There’s some counties I’ve traveled through but haven’t really been to

I make a similar distinction on my lifetime map of counties, but with separate colors for visited vs traveled through. I don't require 10 hours, but I do require that I intentionally went to see a person or place in the county. A meet up with another Atlasian counts as does a unique shop, but a stop for gas or a meal or sundries at a Walmart doesn't. Many of those are only an hour or two, but I felt that it was more substantial than just driving through or changing planes.
