The Battle for God by Kathy   is fantastic, it's hard but very good, about the history behind fundamentalism in Judaism, Islam and Christianity.
The author is Karen Armstrong, and its an excellent choice. I read it a couple of years ago and still find myself referring to it when I hear about certain figures or groups in the news. The book spans 500 years of history tracking the strikingly parallel rise of fundementalism in the great religions descended from Abraham.

I don't have a political book that I'm reading now, though my Christmas copy of Speaker waits for me to have a few spare hours to read it.
