Yeah, this was a shocker to me as well.
A lot of the people who voted for Trump have no interest in the Republican party as such except to stop those they view as DC coal-hating liberals. I think some people looked at the result of the 2014 Senate race and interpreted it to mean that state races now belonged to the Republicans along with the presidential elections. But that was a much lower turnout election and tells you nothing about those who only vote in presidential years. This is even more the case considering that all those whom Trump brought out that hadn't voted before or not voted in quite a while.
