At the Conservative Breakfast Club's business breakfast in Rhode Island, Senator Smid takes the podium to deliver the keynote address:
Good morning and thank you for that warm welcome. I have been honoured to represent you as the Senator for the Northeast this year. I understand some of you are concerned that my retirement will mean a loss of a conservative voice in the Senate.
While it is true that Secretary Hashemite is not a conservative but a true moderate, and while some of his views are not aligned with conservatism, I assure you that if elected, he will be a balanced voice, a temperate voice and a hard-working representative of the Northeast.
Secretary Hashemite is a centrist, and no one would consider him a conservative by any means, however I am very comfortable with his candidacy and will not hesitate to cast a vote for him. His role as Secretary of External Affairs has given him experience and insight into the machinations of government and he has performed his responsibilities dutifully.
I will not hesitate to cast a vote to send Secretary Hashemite to the Senate and I urge all of you to do the same.
