At this point it may be prudent for Romney, Kasich, Bush and other Republicans to endorse Johnson. Why?

Simple.

Endorsing Johnson will prevent Trump from winning, and avoid the incoming decimation of the GOP. Clinton will become POTUS, GOP wins 2018 midterms and set themselves up for redistricting in 2020, securing the next decade in the House. Electing Trump will mean massive losses in 2018 and 2020, to a point where I'm not certain the GOP will be able to regain footing given demographic trends.

They could make the endorse as an attempt to protect the country from Trump and Clinton. Endorsing him may be enough to get him on the debate stage if not win a state.

So are there people who think there will still be a convention bounce? There's no way sane people watching at home will actually like what's going on here.

You assume there are enough sane people in America?

I still think he will get a bounce but maybe not as big as they expected. Clinton and company will have to put one a pristine show because the media will scrutinize and overplay everything.
