I am surprised it took this long, this seems like the kind of story we would've seen 10 years ago.

Oklahoma has voted GOP on the Presidential level every election since 1952 except 1964, and has been getting progressively less Democratic on the statewide level since the 1990s and before.

Any candidate the Democrats ran against Inhofe, a personally popular and very senior and powerful Republican Senator who has been in the Senate longer than many people on this site have been alive, in one of the three most Republican-voting states in the country, in a Republican landslide year was necessarily a sacrificial lamb. Why does it matter who that person was? It's just a matter of getting a name on the ballot, there's no serious electoral prospects there.
