Wasn't Lincoln pen pals with Karl Marx?

Marx wrote a letter congratulating Lincoln on his reelection and received a very polite form letter in response.

It's pretty fair to say that, pre-1870s, the Republicans weren't socialist but if you were a (non-Irish) socialist you were probably a Republican.
