To quote Lewis from that other thread:

A solution to the Presidential Election debacle is postponed until after the election - Erdogan is pushing for a constitutional amendment to have the president elected by the people, the term shortened from 7 to 5 years, and the term limit changed from a maximum of one to a maximum of two.

There's also once again speculation that if he could as he would, the ten-percent threshold would be abolished, preferably before the election, but he's not only got the opposition CHP and of course the army but also parts of his own party dead set against that, so it's not happening.

And the Turkish president vetoed the AKP's presidential election reform (which would have allowed a direct popular election) today.

Well, polls have closed a while ago. Apparently, there was an extremely high turnout. First results are expected during the evening.

n-tv (German news channel) now reports:

More than 50% for AKP and 15% for CHP according to exit polls. MHP also in.

Stupid question: With the MHP and (probably) several Independents elected to the parliament, is it possible that the AKP might actually win less seats than last time?

2002:
34.3% for AKP, 19.4% for CHP... which roughly translates into ca. 64% of the seats for AKP.

2007:
48.75% for AKP, 18.7% for CHP, 14.66% for MHP... which should roughly translates into ca. 59% of the seats for AKP.

SO who says Turkey will ever be in the EU? I say they have a 10% chance. Also, I do not support their candidacy for reasons not associated with this.

Well, the chances are probably a bit higher under a AKP government than under a CHP or any other secular government, since the AKP seems to be pursuing the most pro-Western, pro-European, and also pro-American foreign policy of either party, while CHP & Co. often appear more or less nationalistic and sometimes even eurosceptic.

Which are the two CHP 'provinces' in Asia Minor?

Dave

The northern one: Izmir I & II (it's a single province, but consists of two electoral districts, both voted CHP).

The southern one: Mugla
