Will someone explain WTF is going on here, preferably in English American.

My pleasure. Took me some time to understand.

So, Labour is doing its best to make Britain a vassal of the United States. Accordingly, they passed a law (opposed by all other parties) allowing people to be detained for 42 days without a charge. The Shadow Home Secretary, David Davis (awesome name), decided to call a non-binding referendum on the issue. In Britain, those take the form of by-elections (as you're probably well aware). The LibDems won't be standing a candidate against Davis, and neither will the BNP. So, Labour will look bad to the uninformed viewer by being destroyed in a seat where they got all of 12.7% of the vote in 2005.

The Democratic Unionists voted in favour.

And made it pass, IIRC.

True Angry

Silly Northern Irish parties don't count!

Well, for the purpose of this by-election, they don't, at least.

How did the one UKIP member vote?

Also, David Taylor (North West Leicestershire-Lab) voted both for and against.

If you thought John Kerry was bad...

So far according to Wiki, it's still Con vs. Monster Raving Loony. I'm still hoping for that matchup!

'Twould be great. Best OMRLP performance ever?

NEC sez no Labour candidate. Not a surprise.

This will be the greatest by-election Britain (or the world) has ever seen.

I think Mad Cow-Girl would make an excellent MP.

Unfortunately, she's pro-42 days Sad

At least her campaign slogan is a reference to Douglas Adams.

I thought she was pro-indefinite?

Given the farce this has become, wouldn't it have been nice had the Chancellor used his prerogative and not appointed Davis as Steward and Bailiff of the Three Hundreds of Chiltern?  Granted, a request for appointment hasn't been refused since the 19th century, but the situation would seem to have called for it.

It woul've been interesting.

Greenies, English Democrats, and a Socialist thingee have also nominated candidates, IIRC.

Funny. The English Democrats had said they wouldn't nominate a candidate.

I have no idea...

Fuller breakdown of parties.

"Church of the Militant Elvis"? What do they stand for?

Armed impersonators, of course.

They should change their name to the Literal Socialist Labour Conversative Democrats.
