As far as seeing the country goes, this has been a great year for me:
Favorite County you visited this year?
I found something to enjoy in every state I was in this year (except Mississippi, where I only drove through and never stopped save for gas), but I think my favorite was Otero County, New Mexico. Walking among the white sands was a truly disorienting experience where I lost my sense of space and direction (I really think it would have been dangerous if I hadn't been with others) and then afterward I had a wonderful meal of green chile enchiladas in Alamogordo. Eddy County next door is home to Carlsbad Cavern, the most striking place I've seen this year, but that was all I saw of that county.
