The views expressed herein should not be interpreted as those of the Socialist Party, but they do represent the views of Socialist Unity.

Reflections upon the Electoral Defeat

Aside from the tremendous victory of the Conservative Party at these recent first elections, what stands out about the results is the abject failure of the Socialist Party. Whereas it was generally expected that the Socialist Party would have an excellent chance at leading the first government, instead the Party was entirely shut out of discussion after the election. At this crucial juncture in our nation's history, the Socialist movement has no input whatsoever. It stands to reason that this is an unacceptable situation that must be remedied.

The cause of these difficulties is obvious: the lack of a strong Party apparatus. From the very moment of this Party's founding we see individuals engaging in factional bickering with single-minded determination, as if their only object is to demonstrate to the electorate the inability of the Socialist Party to be trusted with government. There is public dissension against the Party leader and the Executive. Even at this very moment, when might assume that defeat would have chastened the personal ambitions of Socialist Party members, one member actively lobbies for the removal of a Socialist MP from his seat.

The purpose of the Socialist Party is not to sit in permanent opposition and croak about ideals in order to maintain our moral superiority. For those who would prefer such activities, this nation has a communist party that may be of interest. The Socialist Party must strive for the implementation of Socialist goals, a task which requires participation in government. Opposition is a purgatory to be endured, not a panacea to be embraced. It is a limbo to which the Socialist Party will be consigned forever unless its members rally behind the Party leader and the Executive.

All is not lost. There will be a new Parliament elected in less than ten weeks' time, and it should have a rather larger Socialist contingent. For now the Party must examine whether it would like to consign itself to oblivion.
