In order of ability: English, Bengali, Spanish. I can more or less read every major Romance language, but that doesn't really count. People tend to think that I speak a lot more languages than I actually do.

I find it quite interesting that so much speak German and Italian, and comparably little French and Spanish. I thought the latter two to be much more common in the states...

They are much more common. My high school offered classes in Spanish, French, Japanese, and Chinese. I think German is more common in other parts of the country than in California, but it's certainly less common than Spanish or French.
